Biography
Born in Sapporo, Japan in 1960. Received B.F.A. in Photography from Osaka University of Arts in 1981. Sugawara worked for Mr. Osamu Hayasaki and then traveled to settle in France for examining photography and working as photographer. Since then, his solo exhibitions has been held widely. The film “Blue Fish”, which Sugawara worked as director of photography, was officially selected and screened in Berlin International Film Festival in 1996. The National Library of France obtained his works into its permanent collection in 2004. He joined the group exhibition “Made in The Shade” at Pace MacGill Gallery in New York with Robert Frank in 2005. And in the same year, he directed the opening of the animation, “Mushishi”. His working fields have been interdisciplinary beyond photography. In recent years, Sugawara pursues the wet collodion process to capture the dazzle of light and created new types of photography by integrating classic methods with latest digital technologies.
